(7947) Flood severity
1 - Probability is one means of quantifying flood severity. A 1 per cent flood is a flood that has a 1 percent probability of being reached or exceeded in a given year. Similarly, a 10 per cent flood has a 10 percent probability of being reached or exceeded in a given year. 2 - Flood severity can also be expressed in terms of the recurrence interval stated in years. The recurrence interval (T) in years is related to probability (P) in per cent by the following relationship : T = (1/P)x100. For example, a 1 per cent flood is one that will be reached or exceeded on the average once every 100 years.
